Magnetorheological polishing (MRF)
What is magnetorheological polishing?
Magnetorheological polishing (MRF) is a high-precision optical surface processing technology that uses a polishing fluid containing magnetic particles to form a flexible and fluid polishing tool under the action of a magnetic field to achieve material removal and complete the precision polishing and correction of the optical surface. Magnetorheological fluid contains micron-sized magnetic particles. The viscosity and pressure of the liquid are controlled by a computer. MRF can accurately polish the surface of optical components to achieve nano-level smoothness. It is suitable for optical components with complex shapes and achieves high-precision and flexible optical surface processing. It is widely used in the field of high-end optical manufacturing, mainly for the final polishing of optical glass and high-hardness materials, and well meets the ultra-precision processing needs of optical components in aerospace, aviation, and defense.
Advantages of MRF Polishing:
–Highly flexible polishing tools can precisely adapt to complex surface shapes.
–No thermal stress is introduced during the polishing process, suitable for the processing of high-precision optical components.
–Can achieve nanometer-level surface finish and shape accuracy.

Processing Case: Before & After Checked by Zygo Interferometer
High-Precision Shape Correction with MRF Polishing (1/32 RMS to 1/902 RMS, Microcrystalline)
—Initial Condition: The surface is an optical surface with a form error of 1/3 wave RMS.
—Final Condition: Form error reduced to 1/90 wave RMS.
—Process: Magnetorheological polishing.
—Processing Duration: For a 400mm diameter optical element, the process takes between 20 to 50 hours.
—Case Study: This typical case involves a microcrystalline material with a diameter of 422mm, shaped as a coaxial paraboloid. The initial surface accuracy was 0.3332 wave RMS, which was improved to 0.011 wave RMS. The total processing time was 25 hours, divided into three stages: the first stage took 15 hours, the second stage 5 hours, and the third stage 5 hours.
